About Ruth
Welcome to Eastham Floral Arts! My name is Ruth Condon, and floral design is truly in my blood. I grew up immersed in the florist industry, inheriting a rich multi-generational legacy of craftsmanship, dedication, and artistry.
A Rich Family Legacy
My story begins with my family in Natick, MA. In 1947, my mother's brothers founded The Barber Brothers Florist. What started as a single design shop and local greenhouse eventually expanded into a thriving network of seventeen satellite stores, becoming the seventh-ranked FTD florist in the entire country. As the youngest daughter, my mother was encouraged by my grandfather to pursue a higher education that would ensure her independence. She chose to study Floral Design at Simmons College in Boston, later passing her profound knowledge and passion down to her children. Three of my sisters entered the trade and I worked in Hyannis at Flower n Fern with my mother as my instructor, learning every single facet of the business—from hand-delivering arrangements to mastering complex floral mechanics and design. In the early 1980s, my mother and my oldest sister, Kathleen, opened their own flower shop, while I headed to New York.
Big City Adventures: New York & Boston
Seeking to expand my horizons, I left my hometown of Sandwich, MA at the age of 19 for New York City. There, I landed a dream position at the prestigious Irene Hayes, Wadley & Smythe at 58th Street and Park Avenue. It was an exhilarating, high-end environment where I managed elite flower orders for private parties and collaborated directly with celebrities. One of my absolute favorite highlights from that time was working downtown at our warehouse to help construct the iconic Big Bird in flowers for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. We also created a life size sulky and horse in flowers for a dedication at Macy's Herald Square, featuring the legendary harness pacer, Rambling Willie for his biography book release as he had passed the million dollar earnings milestone. Eventually, my journey led me back to Massachusetts, where I sharpened my skills in Boston's competitive market. I spent years working with industry leaders, including Jacobson's Flowers, Faneuil Hall Florist, and an intimate boutique flower shop on Newbury Street.
Returning Home to Cape Cod
In the late 1980s, I returned to my roots on Cape Cod to work alongside my mother and sister at Condon’s Brookside Florist. While working full-time, I also went back to school to earn my business degree, successfully blending my creative passion with operational expertise.
